Avalanche warning for region Lofoten og Vesterålen Tuesday 31.03.2020

Danger level 3 - Considerable avalanche danger

Published:
Be careful in areas with newly deposited wind slabs. They can be found in many aspects due to changing wind direction. Increasing temperatures and rain can lead to wet avalanches.

Avalanche problems

Wind drifted snow (slab avalanches)

You can easily trigger avalanches on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury a car or destroy a small house (size 3).

Buried weak layer of new snow

Wet snow (loose snow avalanches)

on some steep slopes. Avalanches can get large enough to bury or even kill you (size 2).

Loose snow

Below you can see a description of the current snow cover information and current weather forecast in the mountains. If your observations deviate greatly from what is described here, the warning will not necessarily apply either. Always make your own judgments or stay away from avalanche terrain.

Snow cover (in Norwegian)

Monday 30. March 2020

Mountain weather

Monday 30. March 2020

8 mm precipitation, up to 15 mm in the most exposed areas. Fresh breeze from northwest, changing to gale from the southeast during the afternoon. -9 °C to -2 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Tuesday 31. March 2020

10 mm precipitation, up to 25 mm in the most exposed areas. Moderate gale from southwest, changing to moderate gale from the northwest during the afternoon. -3 °C to 0 °C at 700 m a.s.l. Cloudy.

Advice

The bulletin is a planning tool and may differ from the actual situation. Always make your own evaluation. To be 100 % avalanche safe, avoid all avalanche terrain.

Avalanche risk assessment
